IF EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE TRY IGNORANCE
In my opinion, what the statement
"If you think education is expensive try ignorance" is trying to say is that the disadvantages of not having an education outweighs the price of getting a good education. If you add in everything you might lose without an education, such as the chance to get a good job, the chance to meet great friends, improved chances of getting a spouse and even feelings of inferiority as compared to the better educated, you might realise that education is a long term investment that pays dividends for life. According to recent surveys, Americans with college degrees earned on average twice that of Americans with only a high school diploma. Besides this obvious monetary benefit, there's also the unquantifiable social and emotional advantages that education brings you, as I mentioned earlier.
Hence, when you say,
"If you think education is expensive try ignorance", you are comparing the expense of education to the expense of not having an education (ignorance), and thus implying that what you lose by not having an education is far more significant than what you have to pay to get the education.
Of course, if I were to play the devil's advocate, I could also argue that firstly, the potential benefits of education are not guaranteed whereas the cost of education is certain and very real, secondly, that the benefits of education are vastly intangible whereas the cost of education is concrete, and thirdly, that the cost of education might be too high to be affordable by certain individuals or families and thus they have no other options but to forgo education.
In any case, this looks like some essay question for a school assignment, and if so I recommend that you try and come up with a few of your own points rather than relying on others.
